CDEarth : Sudoku computer game no fad

Sudoku started out seemingly as just another fad. It was already a huge hit in Japan. But then it swept England and within a year was carried by hundreds of newspapers in the United States. Sudoku puzzles have been the focus of dozens of books, many of bestsellers on the top 100 book list.

The press has been equally enamoured by this deceptively simple numbers puzzle. "Not since - well, ever - have the numbers 1 to 9 been so popular" writes Time Magazine. The New York Post raves its "diabolically addictive" and the conservative, staunchly Economist blushes that Sudoku is "nothing short of astonishing".

Sudoku (also called Su Doku or Numbers Place) like many great mind games has simple instructions yet can be quite addicting and with its own levels of difficulty. The objective is to fill a 9x9 grid so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 boxes contains the digits from 1 to 9. The puzzle setter provides a partially completed grid.

New variations on this game include having a larger grid such as 9x9, 16x16 and even 25x25 for those who frankly need to watch more TV. Other variations substitute symbols or pictures for the numbers. The Sudoku craze has also spun new games like Kakuro (also called Cross Sums) and Nanograms.

Since this is a computer and software related blog, we are obligated to mention that the best way to learn and play Sudoku is on your computer. Many great Sudoku computer games can generate new puzzles as fast as you can solve them. That way you don't have to way for tomorrow's newspaper to satisfy your Sudoku addiction.

CDEarth has a terrific Sudoku version you may want to check out. In addition to Sudoku, the CD comes with a bonus 10 additional puzzles games.

CdEarth: Personal Finance Software makes money sense

Does anyone actually balance their checkbook? The chore has to be up there with programming the VCR clock and flossing. We know we should do it but we'll get to it tomorrow.

The problem is made worse when we realize we have multiple checking and savings accounts to keep track of. Throw in the retirement accounts (hopefully we have some) and other investments (hopefully they're up) and suddenly we realize we have no idea what is where and, most importantly, how much.

Luckily, inexpensive or free personal finance software can help you organize your finances and keeps track of where, when and how the money goes. It is also a great tool to get a big picture of your financial net worth.

There are some excellent products on the market including the two most popular retail packages, Quicken Intuit and Microsoft Money. The inexpensive and even free personal finance software surprisingly have most of the features of these more expensive retail products.

When looking for a personal finance software, some of the features you will want to look for:
  • Manage Multiple Accounts - Create and maintain an electronic checkbook - Checking, Savings, Credit Card or Loans, Stock Investment Accounts, Assets
  • Track your Bills and Deposits - Create bills & deposits to be reminded of your upcoming bills and deposits so you never miss a payment or deposit
  • Importing, Exporting and Printing - Ability to import, export and print your account information
  • Account Summary Views and Navigation - An easy to use tree view navigator to navigate across accounts and summarized views of your accounts, upcoming bills & deposits and income vs. expenses
  • Reporting - Generate reports so you can easily view your spending/expenses in a wide variety of ways. View spending by category over a date range for specific or all accounts. View spending on a single category over time. View income vs expenses. View spending by payee. View expenses and how you are doing on a budget.

CD Earth has an excellent Personal Wealth Manager you might want to check out.

CDEarth: OpenOffice versus Microsoft Office

What would you say if we offered you a million dollar house for less then $1000? How about a state-of-the-art large-screen TV worth $7000 for about $50? You'd ask what's the catch, decide there's probably something seriously wrong with the house or TV and most certainly walk away from the offer. When it sounds to good to be true, it almost always is.

The key word is "almost". In the software world, products are often sold for over $500 on the name alone when comparable products exist for few dollars - and even free. These cheaper alternatives may have a few less whistles and bells but you'll never notice because you never use them. We've already talked about many such products in earlier posts. Today we talk about Microsoft Office which can cost $700-800 for the complete licensed suite. But there is a free Open Office suite alternative...

OpenOffice Office Suite is fully Microsoft Office compatible. So you can always open any document, spreadsheet, and presentation created by Microsoft Office and you can always save them so it can be opened in Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org easily creates documents, analyze spreadsheets, produce eye-catching presentations, design dramatic illustrations, and even convert your files into PDFs.

WRITER is a word processor to create documents, reports, newsletters, and brochures. It has everything you would expect from a modern, fully equipped word processor. You can easily integrate images and charts in documents, create everything from business letters to complete books with professional layouts, as well as create and publish Web content.

CALC is a feature-packed spreadsheet. It will calculate, analyze, and visually communicate your data quickly and easily. Use advanced spreadsheet functions and decision-making tools to perform sophisticated data analysis. Use built-in charting tools to generate impressive 2D and 3D charts. Plus, it is fully compatible with Microsoft Excel. So documents created in MS Excel can be opened in CALC and vice-versa.

IMPRESS
is a fast, powerful way to create effective multimedia presentations. It is a truly outstanding tool for creating effective multimedia presentations. Your presentations will stand out with 2D and 3D clip art, special effects, animation, and high-impact drawing tools. Plus, it is fully compatible with Microsoft PowerPoint. So documents created in MS PowerPoint can be opened in IMPRESS and vice-versa.

DRAW is an excellent drawing tool that compares to CorelDRAW. It produces everything from simple diagrams to 3D illustrations and special effects. DRAW can even manipulate objects rotating them in two or three dimensions.

But as they say on late-night TV, wait that's not all. There's also BASE, a database software much like Microsoft Access, and MATH, a tool for creating and editing mathematical formulae, similar to Microsoft Equation Editor.

It's worth repeating that all OpenOffice software works seamlessly with Microsoft products. So you can always open any document, spreadsheet, and presentation created by Microsoft Office and you can always save them so it can be opened in Microsoft Office.

CD Earth can help you make more sense of this.

Complete Computer Security with Anti-Virus, Firewall and Spyware Protection

You probably feel pretty secure right now sitting at home in front of your computer. All your windows and doors are locked. Maybe you even have a home security system. Nobody is getting inside your castle that you don't want, right? You might be right but at the same time you'd be very wrong.

The most likely intruders will come through your phone line then through your door. And they can cause just as much damage - and in many cases more - to your life and personal assets.

An AOL/National Cyber Security Alliance Online Safety Study found that 81% of home PCs lack at least one of the three critical protections -- updated computer virus software, spyware protection, and a secure firewall necessary to help guard against viruses, spyware, hackers, and other threats.

That means you need to start with a good Computer Firewall software to automatically protect your computer against hackers, Trojan horses, and other malicious outside attacks keeping the information on your PC safe and private. The Firewall also prevents any programs on your computer such as spyware and adware from sending any information to the outside world without your permission. This way your personal data stays safe.

Second, you'll need a good Spyware and Adware Removal software that can detect and remove unwanted spyware/adware programs from your computer. Many of these programs get installed - usually without your approval - while you are surfing and downloading software online. The programs at best collect and send basic information about you to someone. At worst, they can cause damage or help steal your personal and financial information.

Finally, you'll also need a comprehensive Anti-Virus software that continuously monitors your computer and detects spyware and viruses before they can cause damage. Make sure you have a way to get periodic updates so your anti-virus software knows about the latest viruses. New viruses are developed and unleashed daily. If you cannot get the latest updates from the software provider, your anti-virus software becomes ineffective very quickly.

CD Earth can help you make more sense of this.

CD Earth: Free Bible Study, Bible Verse and Bible Commentary Software

During this Easter and Passover holiday season, it's a good time to talk about Bible Reference and Bible Study software. Many of us want to improve our knowledge of Bible verse and other spiritual material.

All students of the Bible will find religious software invaluable. Religious software can be a great addition to any spiritual collection. With most Bible Study software you can search for a specific verse, compare texts, find all passages that reference a certain word or character and much more.

You can find free bible software and free bible study online. Many of these products come with dozens or even hundreds of bible texts, commentary texts, lexicons, bible dictionaries, and even daily devotionals.

Example of Bible texts include:

  • King James Bible
  • American Standard Version
  • Darby Bible
  • A Conservative Version
  • World English Bible
  • Webster Bible
  • and many more

Commentary texts include:

  • Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
  • Luther's Commentary on Galatians
  • Jamieson Fausset Brown Bible Commentary
  • John Lightfoot Commentary
  • Adam Clarke's Commentary on the Bible
  • Matthew Henry's Complete Commentary on the Whole Bible
  • Darby Translation Notes
  • and many more

Lexicons & Dictionaries include:

  • Strong's Greek Bible Dictionary
  • Strong's Hebrew Bible Dictionary
  • Robinson's Morphological Analysis Codes
What's most incredible is that you can spend over $1000 on books to compile a similar collection that usually comes free with the software. Bible software also makes it easy with all the texts in one location so you can search for a certain passage, look up your favorite Bible verse, then cross-reference it with your preferred commentaries or look up its meaning in one of the specialized Bible dictionaries.

We have love movies, books and art. We proudly display our family and travel photographs on our desks and throughout our house. We decorate our homes and offices to showcase our personalities.

Yet our computers - most likely how we spend most of our work and many of our personal hours - remain solid color blue.

You can find beautiful free desktop backgrounds and wallpapers online. There are many websites where you can download free photo backgrounds, beautiful nature backgrounds, 3D backgrounds, animal backgrounds, futuristic backgrounds, space wallpaper, artistic backgrounds, animated backgrounds, airplane wallpaper and thousands of other choices.

Free Screensavers: 3D, Animated, Aquarium, Matrix, Nature & more

Everyone loves to customize. We customize our homes, cars and even our cubicles at work to make them feel more unique and show our personalities. Did you know you can do the same with your computer?

Does your monitor just go blank when you are away from they keyboard for a few minutes? Today we talk about changing that with popular screen savers. Still have the same boring, blue desktop background since you first installed your computer? We'll talk about desktop backgrounds and wallpaper tomorrow. (You can also add velvet curtains around your monitor or a shag cover for your keyboard, but that type of customization is for a different discussion and a different blog. :)

A screensaver is a computer program originally designed to conserve the image quality of computer monitors by blanking the screen, or filling it with moving images or patterns when the computer was not in use. Today, screensavers are primarily used for entertainment or security purposes.

Screensaver software can also be used as a rudimentary security measure. Many screensavers can be configured to ask users for a password before permitting the user to resume work. So if you leave your computer for a few minutes - especially if its at work or other publicly accessible are - you will need to provide a password to access the computer again.

You can start your search online. There are many excellent free screensavers websites. You can also find many screensavers that you can purchase individually or even on a screensavers CD. Most range from few dollars to about $20 per screensaver. Some of the more popular screensavers include 3D screensavers, Matrix screensaver, animated screensavers, aquarium screensaver, nature scenes, holiday theme screensavers, cartoon characters or your favorite movie themes. There are even programs that will rotate your own digital photos as a screensaver.

Once the screensaver is installed:
  1. Right click on an empty part of your desktop and select Properties.
  2. Select the "Screen Saver" tab.
  3. On the "Screen saver" dropdown box, select the screensaver you want to run.
  4. Click the "Preview" button to preview this screensaver.
  5. If you like what you see, click "Apply" button, then click "OK" button.
  6. Next time your computer is inactive for set amount of minutes, the screensaver you just selected will run.
  7. Follow the steps above anytime you want to select a new screensaver.

Now that you know what to do, find something truely unique or beautiful to impress anyone walking by your computer.

CD Earth: Photo Editor and Desktop Publishing Software

Lets talk about photos and images. Everyone loves to take digital photographs. Most of us are lucky if we can get them from the camera to our computer where they sit collecting digital dust.

What if you could edit photos by removing the red-eyes or cropping out some guy walking through your photo? What if you could get really creative by adding a fancy border around your picture, splice two or more photos together, insert some funny text at bottom or even add a graphic into the photo?

Then you could create a slideshow with your new photos and the music you created yesterday using the Music Editor or add the new photos into your home video with the Video Editor. OK, we're getting ahead of ourselves. ;-)

The main thing to know is you can find great photo, graphics and image editors that let you do all these things and more. Some of the products like Adobe Photoshop and Corel Paint Shop Pro can from $250 to $600. The good news: there are excellent inexpensive and ever free graphics and photo editing software that can do everything you need.

Now that you have your photos and images, what do you do with them? Just remember that if you plan to print something, design it first with desktop publishing software.

Easy to use publishing software lets you create everything from a neighborhood newsletter to publishing a small newspaper. Use it to create business stationary and brochures, greeting cards, posters, and anything else your imagination dictates.

Some of the many things you can create with desktop publishing software:

    • Scrapbooks
    • Greeting cards

    • Logos
    • Drawings
    • Posters
    • CD covers
    • Publish small newspaper or magazine

    CDEarth: express your creative side

Like most of us, you probably use your computer to send emails to friends and family and surf the web to research your vacation, buy a book at Amazon or get a great deal on eBay.

What about using your computer to get in touch with your creative side?

Think you can be the next Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese? Well even if you don't plan to be featured in the next film festival, you can still use a Video Editor software to become your family's director. Most home movie editing software lets you easily edit and add special affects to your home movies. So you can call the shots just like the pros. Then you can view your personal memories on DVD or your computer.

How about adding some sounds and music to that home movie or even create your own CD singing your favorite tunes? You can use a Music Editor software to create and edit music and sound recordings by editing sounds, mixing tracks, and applying professional sound-effects. Most home music editing software will let you mix and match till you get the sound you like.
